Akwa Ibom State is advancing its healthcare transformation with the establishment of the Ibom International Hospital (IIH), a 350-bed quaternary facility designed to deliver advanced, specialist care in the state.
Sited along the Ibom medical corridor in Uyo, the project is part of the ARISE Agenda’s push to position Akwa Ibom as a center for high-end medical services and reduce dependence on out-of-state and overseas treatment. The hospital is planned as a nine-floor facility with 24 specialized departments, covering key areas such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, renal care, orthopedics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, infectious diseases and critical care.
Designed to handle complex cases, from advanced surgeries to long-term disease management, the facility is expected to expand the state’s capacity beyond basic and secondary care into highly specialized medicine. Design features focus on modern, efficient care delivery.
The hospital will integrate advanced diagnostic systems, including imaging and laboratory services, alongside digital health platforms for patient records and clinical coordination. Robotic-assisted surgical units are also part of the plan, enabling more precise procedures with shorter recovery times. The goal is to ensure that diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care can be handled within one coordinated system, reducing the need for referrals.
The IIH is being developed as a referral hub for the South-South and South-East regions. Patients who previously travelled to cities like Lagos or Abuja for specialist care are expected to access similar services in IIH. This shift is not only about convenience; it directly reduces the financial and emotional strain associated with long-distance medical travel.
To support operations, the state is also developing residential facilities for medical personnel as part of a comprehensive medical-city concept. This approach is intended to attract and retain skilled professionals by providing both modern workspaces and stable living conditions. The clustering of facilities within the medical corridor is designed to encourage collaboration, training and continuous improvement in service delivery.
For the people, the benefits are significant. Access to specialist care within the state means earlier diagnosis, faster treatment and better health outcomes. Patients with conditions such as cancer, cardiac diseases or complex surgical needs will no longer face the same delays or costs tied to travel.
The project also strengthens the wider health system. By handling high-level cases, the hospital is expected to reduce pressure on existing facilities such as the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital and Ibom Multi Specialist Hospital in Itam . This creates a clearer referral pathway—from primary care centers to secondary hospitals and up to quaternary care—making the entire system more efficient.
Beyond healthcare delivery, the hospital carries economic value. It is expected to generate employment for medical and non-medical workers, while also supporting surrounding businesses through increased activity. Over time, the facility could contribute to internally generated revenue through specialized services, partnerships and research activities.
For governance, the project demonstrates long-term planning. Rather than treating healthcare as a purely social service, the state is positioning it as both a public good and a strategic sector for growth. The emphasis is not only on building infrastructure, but on ensuring that it is functional, staffed, and integrated into a sustainable system.
