EMR Sets Agenda for Skills Development, Sector-Focused Reporting in Akwa Ibom

The newly inaugurated leadership of the Energy and Maritime Reporters of Nigeria (EMR), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has unveiled plans to prioritize professional development, capacity building, and investigative reporting as part of efforts to strengthen journalism practice in the energy and maritime sectors.
Speaking shortly after the inauguration of the new Executive Council on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the State Chairman, Harrison Ndifreke, said the chapter would focus on equipping members with the skills and knowledge required to effectively report developments in two of Nigeria’s most strategic economic sectors.

According to him, the increasing complexity of issues in the energy and maritime industries demands continuous training and specialization among journalists to ensure accurate, balanced, and impactful reporting.
Ndifreke noted that one of the major objectives of the new administration would be to organize regular workshops, seminars, and capacity-building programmes aimed at improving members’ professional competence and enhancing their understanding of industry trends.

He stressed that journalists covering the sectors have a crucial role to play in promoting transparency, accountability, and sustainable development through factual and insightful reportage.

The chairman also identified investigative journalism as a key priority of the new executive, stating that the chapter would encourage members to pursue in-depth reporting capable of highlighting critical issues affecting the energy and maritime industries.

While outlining the administration’s vision, Ndifreke called on stakeholders within the sectors to collaborate with the association in promoting access to information and fostering responsible journalism.

He further emphasized the need for unity among members, noting that collective commitment would be essential in achieving the chapter’s goals and elevating the profile of EMR within and outside Akwa Ibom State.

The chairman expressed appreciation to the immediate past State Chairman, Dr. Saviour Ekpe, for laying a solid foundation for the association’s growth and assured members that the new executive would consolidate on existing achievements.

The inaugurated Executive Council comprises Harrison Ndifreke as State Chairman; Helen John, Vice Chairman; Mabel Ekanem, Secretary; Ofonime Honesty, Assistant Secretary; Josephine Ekpa, Treasurer; Deborah Young, Financial Secretary; Udeme Utip, Public Relations Officer; Unyime Ekwere, KSJ, Welfare Officer; Comrade Solomon Okpo, Director of Programmes; and Diananasi Effiong,
Director of Marketing.

Ndifreke reaffirmed the commitment of the new leadership to integrity, professionalism, and service, pledging to position the chapter as a leading voice in energy and maritime journalism in Nigeria
